The proposal regarding Nilgaon is pending with the Madhya Pradesh government for nine months.
Bhopal (State Bureau). Nilgai (Rojda) has also become a big problem for the farmers of Madhya Pradesh who are facing problems like hailstorm, excessive rain etc. The number of Nilgai is increasing continuously in 36 districts including Ratlam, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Dewas, Chhatarpur, Sagar, Rewa, Shahdol. Its exact figures are not even with the Forest Department, but the department believes that there has been an increase in the number. In such a situation, the MLAs have also raised this issue in the assembly.
On the question raised by MLA Dr. Rajendra Pandey in the Vidhan Sabha, Forest Minister Vijay Shah said in a written reply that the information of Nilgai in the revenue sector is based on the information of the villagers. On the other hand, the government has not been able to simplify the rules of hunting of Nilgai in the last one year. Its proposal is pending at the government level. Like pigs and deer, Nilgai also destroy standing crops.
It does more damage than other wildlife. The troubled farmers have been pleading with the government for many years. This issue has also come up in this session of the Legislative Assembly. The Forest Minister has said in a written reply that the government compensates for the damage caused to the crops by Nilgai.
Farmers are given compensation. However, the government still does not have a permanent solution to this problem. The government has been working on controlling the number of Nilgai for about 10 years. Work was done on the first sterilization, which was unsuccessful. After this there was a churn on simplifying the rules of hunting for Nilgai. The Forest Department prepared a draft of the amendment in about one and a half years, in which it is proposed to take away the rights of permission for hunting Nilgai from the sub-divisional revenue officer and give it to SDO Forest. The draft has been sent to the government in July 2021. Suggestions have also been sought from MLAs, but the decision is not being taken.
